Memdeklaro is a web app where you can customize and print a self-declaration of identity, free of charge with no third parties. The generator is privacy-friendly and your data never leaves your browser.
Decentralized identity (DID), also known as self-sovereign identity (SSI) or web3 identity, is a technology that helps users to keep control over their data and reduce dependency on third parties. Key features include public key cryptography, decentralized storage, verifiable credentials, trusted issuers and self-attested credentials. As a self-declaration, Memdeklaro is part of the self-attested credentials category.
As a supporter of freedom of identity, Memdeklaro supports and recognizes the power of self-chosen names and universal access to self-declared ID. Traditional government identity systems exclude millions of people from daily necessities, which locks innocent people out of society. Unlike the Nansen Passports of the past, NGOs like the United Nations and Red Cross do not currently offer a humanitarian alternative to the monopoly on identity. In comparison, self-declaration is accessible to everyone and does not require third party permission, making it an ethical alternative to centralized identity services.
The Memdeklaro project began in November 2024 as a public domain initiative aiming to support individual freedom through self-asserted identity.
Open https://memdeklaro.org in your web browser and fill out the self-declaration form. Your decentralized identity will be generated immediately, ready to download and print or use digitally. No signup, subscription or download is required.
You can print the self-declaration yourself at home, for example as a business card, or order a CR-80 plastic card from a printing service. The Memdeklaro project does not print and ship cards.
Simply save the front and back of the self-declaration to your device. Alternatively, you can click "Save as PDF" and then import it into a wallet such as Google Wallet or Apple Wallet.
For privacy reasons, the web app does not save or remember your self-declaration, so if you lose the files, you will need to generate a new self-declaration.
Yes. Memdeklaro will always be free to use.
No. Memdeklaro is a self-declaration and will never require government ID. Many people worldwide do not have access to government ID or cannot safely use it. Memdeklaro is for everyone and aims to be an inclusive, accessible and safe alternative to centralized ID providers.
Yes. Memdeklaro supports freedom of identity, meaning that you can use any name you are comfortable with, such as a preferred name or self-chosen name.
Memdeklaro believes that people should be judged on their actions and beliefs, and not on where they were born or who they were born to, which protects dissidents, refugees, and survivors of child abuse or cult abuse.
If you wish to optionally include information such as citizenship, place of birth, family or religion, you can write it in the Notes field. The Notes field is printed on the back of the self-declaration.
Yes, Memdeklaro is in the public domain. The project can be browsed, downloaded and forked on Github.
Yes, you can download the generator from the Download page and run it offline.
No. Your data remains locally in your browser and is not recorded on a blockchain, database or IPFS storage.
No. The web app runs locally in your browser. User data is never sent to a server and not stored in a database. If you close the tab, the data is removed from your device's memory, unless you choose to save the self-declaration to your device's storage by clicking "Download".
Yes. To generate a verifiable credential in JSON-LD format, check the "Generate DID" checkbox. As a self-declaration, the Memdeklaro project does not act as a trusted issuer and does not sign self-declarations. You will need to sign it yourself as a self-attested credential. In addition, the Memdeklaro project does not upload files to a database, blockchain or IPFS - you will need to upload the self-declaration yourself to your digital wallet.
MRZ and PDF417 are two implementations of machine readable text. MRZ is displayed as plaintext, while PDF417 is in a barcode format. Memdeklaro uses MRZ encoding by default, but you can choose to use a PDF417 barcode by checking the "Include Barcode" checkbox.
Yes, you can download a QR code of your self-declaration by clicking "Save as PDF". The PDF file contains your self-declaration in graphical format and as a QR code.
Alternative non-government ID and self-sovereign identity providers include World Passport, Digitalcourage and Bitnation (discontinued).
